ABOUT TAMZIN

Tamzin’s art is inspired by her love of nature and her fascination with the science behind every living thing. She says: “When painting I start with an anchor point, usually a figure which is then surrounded in pattern, almost as if it emerges from pattern. Sometimes I use crafted pattern and other times natural pattern, over which I have only a certain element of control. Pattern is part of life and evident in the building blocks of life, our DNA. Incorporating pattern in my work is for me about capturing part of nature, of the science behind every living thing and placing it as an integral, fundamental element of the painting.”

In addition to her paintings, Tamzin also creates lamps by suspending New Zealand’s native leaves and grasses in resin. Her light pieces have been part of the Trust Horizon Light Up Whakatāne festival, a collaborative event that showcases arts, music, dance and interactions through light. Tamzin says: “I have always loved light though nature and as an artist I was puzzled how to capture that beauty and with resin I have discovered a pathway. If you notice the gaps between branches in a tree where light shines or in a skeleton leaf the tiny holes that allow light through – somehow light is part of the artwork of nature.”
